English as a Second Language (ESL)

DOBI ESL tutoring blends inspiration from Orton-Gillingham, Barton, and Davis methods into a structured, multisensory program that builds clear pronunciation, strong vocabulary, and confident grammar across listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Each one-to-one lesson is personalized, play-based, and step-by-step—turning tricky sounds and sentences into simple, memorable habits so learners progress quickly and feel confident using English in real life.

Our Method

Multisensory, Structured Literacy/Orton-Gillingham techniques map well to the needs of English-as-a-Second-Language learners: direct, explicit, and sequential lessons in phonology, decoding, spelling, and language structure give ELs clear routines for connecting sounds to print while building vocabulary and grammar across listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

The International Dyslexia Association notes that Structured Literacy benefits not only students with reading difficulties but also English learners when instruction is adjusted for language proficiency. Research and expert reviews further show that systematic phonics improves ELs’ word reading and that these gains can carry over to comprehension—especially when paired with oral-language work. Multisensory routines (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, tactile) provide additional memory supports for emergent bilinguals, with recent studies reporting positive effects on early alphabet and vocabulary learning. â€‹

DOBI delivers ESL the DOBI way: a one-to-one, multisensory loop that blends Orton-Gillingham structure with Barton and Davis strategies, tailored specifically for second-language learners. We start with a quick placement to map L1-influenced patterns (tricky sounds, spelling confusions, word order), then build a step-by-step plan that pairs explicit phonics with pronunciation drills, morphology “mini-lessons” (prefixes, roots, suffixes), and sentence-making routines. Every lesson moves from sound to print to speech to meaning—using tactile tools, visual models, and gamified practice—so vocabulary, grammar, and fluency stick fast. Real-world tasks (emails, dialogues, classroom/work phrases) ensure immediate transfer, while specific, timely praise and micro-goals keep motivation high.
